Born and bred in Northern Ireland, but well travelled and currently living abroad….I can truly say that home is where the heart is. Every time I fly back to Belfast and see the first glimpse of the Emerald Isle below the thick grey clouds which seem to hover over the island and never leave, I get a feeling of nostalgia. I can see the well watered fields of Ireland and the rich green shades which it is so renowned for….I can see the cliffs and beautiful coastline and then as we near Belfast I can see the city. Home.
Every time I go back I am so impressed by the beauty of Northern Ireland’s North Antrim Coast, the Giant’s Causeway and the murals which tell something of the country’s troubled past in the capital. Having lived in so many different parts of the world I always jump at the chance to get a holiday at home.
Last October I found cheap flights with easyjet to Belfast and so I decided to go home for a couple of days, and I even convinced a friend to come with me and discover my part of the world. Arriving in Belfast International we were warmly greeted by my sister who had come to collect us at the airport. We spent a couple of days in the city so that my friend could get a real feel for life in the capital and also discover a bit more about the history. Then we headed to the north coast to stay with my parents for a few days. We spent hours taking photographs of Portstewart harbour, the convent and the stunning coast before heading to Portrush for a meal at the best restaurant in Northern Ireland (okay, it’s not officially the best restaurant, but it is the most popular on the north coast) – The Wine Bar. Having photographed just about everything possible we decided to head to Londonderry the next day to see the historic walled city.
On our way to Belfast to catch our flight back my friend told me what a beautiful place Northern Ireland is. I agree…..after all, home is where the heart is.
