If you’re planning on taking a camera away with you on holiday (And let’s face it, if you’re on this site the likelihood is you are), then you’d probably think that your travel insurance will cover you should anything happen to it.
Well, it might be worth checking that policy, because many travel insurance companies do no not provide adequate cover for single items, typically no more than £150 to £300. This is fine for those of us who see photography as little more than a hobby, but the others with a ruck of top-quality gear could stand to lose out if it’s not properly covered and they have an accident.
Some companies also define some equipment as ‘high risk’ or ‘valuable’ as well, and may offer a different amount of cover for these items. These include all manner of electrical items, jewellery and watches, so it is worth knowing what you are taking, and whether your travel insurance covers it.
Recent figures suggest that lost or stolen luggage and other belongings is the second most common travel insurance claim made by British policyholders in 2009, with around 1,000 tourists having luggage go missing every day.
These numbers are particularly worrying if you consider that some of these people are going on long holidays far away from home. For example, a family on Florida holidays is likely to have packed a large amount of expensive and valuable luggage, and for this to go missing or be stolen would not only ruin the holiday, but potentially cause huge financial problems if their cover does not adequately cover them.
Before you next go away, check your policy to ensure you are adequately covered, and always remember that just because a policy is the cheapest, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the best deal you can get.
